Emitec was formed by three members of staff in 1986 as a subsidiary of Siemens and GKN. Then, as now, the company’s vision was:
“Cars that clean the environment” In 1988 the new company presented the E-Kat, an electrically heated catalytic converter, in Florence as a first step towards this goal. (Animation) Emitec used metal for its substrates from the start and within a few years became the world leader in the production of metal catalyst substrates. Wafer-thin, robust foils made from heat-resistant steel alloys form the basis of the company’s durable and reliable metal substrates. The patented S-form of the foils ensured that the new product achieved global market penetration and was applied to all types of vehicles.

The development moved from electrically heated catalysts, extremely thin “Superfoils”, high cell density substrates and close-coupled catalysts to “turbulent” catalysts with structured steel foils. These foils generate turbulence in the exhaust gas stream and so greatly increase the efficiency of the catalyst. The catalysts are more compact, lighter and cheaper to produce and generate less backpressure than conventional designs, leading to improved fuel economy and a reduction in CO2 emissions.

Regeneration-free partial-flow deep-bed diesel particulate filters, fitted as original equipment or as a simple retrofit solution to cars and commercial vehicles, and systems that reduce NOx (nitrogen oxide) on the basis of “turbulent catalysts” round off Emitec’s product range.
